Thirty three counties have been designated for federal disaster assistance to help households and businesses recover from Hurricane Irene. Beaufort, Bertie, Brunswick, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Craven, Currituck, Dare, Duplin, Edgecombe, Gates, Greene, Halifax, Hertford, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash, New Hanover, Northampton, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Pitt, Tyrrell, Vance, Warren, Washington and Wilson.
Individual Assistance for homeowners and renters can include grants to help pay for temporary rental assistance, home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses not met by insurance or other assistance programs. Also, low-interest disaster loans from the Small Business Administration are available to cover residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance.
Working with clients from Tropical Storm Nicole (fall 2010) and Spring Tornado event (April 2011), NC VOAD responds to Hurricane Irene. The twelve long term recovery groups established or energized following the tornadoes will provide a mentoring capability as new groups are established following Irene.
